I ran quickly. I managed to catch up to her at the same place where we had run into each other. I yelled her name, called for her to stop, but to no avail. I’d almost given up on chasing after her when she fell. She tripped on a loose stone, letting out a small shriek as she fell face first into the ground. I rushed over to her, and helped her sit up straight. She flinched when I placed my hand on her back to help her. “Are you all right?” I asked, concerned. She’d hit the ground pretty hard. She nodded once, though whether it was because she was shaken by the fall, or my “resurrection”, I was unable to tell. I stood there awkwardly as she coughed a few times. I became even more uncomfortable as I saw tears leak from her ocean blue eyes. I squatted beside her, “You don’t look too okay, to me. Are you hurt?” I asked, my voice laden with genuine concern and worry.
She nodded slowly, “Nothing’s broken...” she spoke softly, tears still streaking her face. I smiled sadly and tapped my head with my index finger, “What about up here?”
“No, nothing up there is broken, bruised maybe, but not broken.” Tanya said quietly, and she began to stand up. I straightened up out of my squat and helped her to her feet.
“Then why are you crying?” I asked softly, as she straightened the front of her red dress. She pulled me close and hugged me tightly, water still leaving her eyes, “Because I missed you”.
I stared at the side of her head. We’d been good friends, to be sure, but it’d been three years, and I was surprised she hadn’t been able to cope. Or…my thoughts suddenly shifted into serous gear. What had I missed while I was recuperating? I was filled with fear as I remembered the murder I had witnessed during my travels home. What had happened? Had the warriors made their way into the village? Had they killed any one? My mind swam, and as Tanya pulled away from me, I asked her in a shaking voice, “Can we go back to the others, please? I’d like to share the news with my parents, if Adam hasn’t enlightened them himself already.” I allowed a small smile to cross my face.
“Can we wait a few more minutes please? I just need to compose myself,” she said, wiping the tears from her eyes, though new droplets of water replaced all she removed. I heard swift footsteps running towards the two of us. I turned towards the noise, to see my brother running towards us with fear plastered upon his face. “Toark, we need to get back to the village, now!”
“Adam, what’s wrong?” I asked with fear and concern. All he did was point behind me, up into the sky. Black smoke billowed into the air, and as I watched with dawning horror, several gunshots echoed through the air…

Seems like Toark's had a life ridden with sorrow...
Great so far, as usual!
